Fact-check: No, Iranian state TV did not accuse Pakistan Army chief of 'double game'
Updated Tuesday May 05 2026
Amid a fragile ceasefire and following initial rounds of talks held in Pakistan, between the United States and Iran in April, a video circulating on social media has garnered tens of thousands of views. The clip claims that Iranian state television accused Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, of playing a “double game” while mediating between the two sides.
The claim is baseless.
Claim
On April 24, a user on X (formerly Twitter) posted: “It’s official. Iran’s state TV channel is now accusing Field Marshal Asim Munir by name, alleging that he is playing a double game with Iran.”
The post included a 26-second video in Persian showing a news anchor delivering what appears to be a broadcast.
At the time of writing, the post had received more than 137,000 views, 1,900 likes, and 724 reposts.
Similar claims have also circulated across X, Facebook, and TikTok.
Fact
The host of a programme on Iran’s state television made no such comment about Pakistan’s army chief.
Using keyframe analysis, Geo Fact Check traced the original video to a post published on April 20 by Telewebion, an Iranian streaming platform.
The clip is taken from a broadcast aired on IRINN, Iran’s state-run news channel. The full segment, which runs over five minutes, features an anchor providing analysis of backchannel discussions between Iran and the United States.
A translation of the Persian audio by Geo Fact Check shows that the anchor discusses Field Marshal Asim Munir’s visit to Iran on April 18, stating that he was expected to convey Iran’s proposals to the United States.
At no point does the anchor accuse the Pakistani military chief of playing a “double game.”
The actual news broadcast can be viewed here.
Additionally, the programme’s host, Sarbaz Rezvi, publicly rejected the viral claim.
In a post on X, he stated: “I am the host of this program and I understand Urdu. The caption on the viral post is an absolute lie. I never said that Asim Munir is playing a double game with Iran… everything else being claimed is false.”
Verdict: The viral video has been misrepresented. The original Iranian state TV broadcast contains no accusation that Pakistan’s army chief Asim Munir was playing a “double game.”
