IJT protests in Lahore after PU hostel raid

LAHORE: The Islami Jamiat-e-Tulaba (IJT) which is the student wing of the JI protested against the police and Punjab University (PU)administration raid at hostel number 16.

21 students belonging to the IJT accused of creating ruckus were arrested during the raid at the hostel. According to police and university administration, bottles of alcohol, Bhang (drink made from cannabis leaves) and bullets were recovered from room 345 which was allotted to Rao Adnan who is the Nazim of the student organisation.

According to provincial education minister Rana Mashood, cases under the terrorism act have been registered against students accused of misbehaving with professors.

Following the raid, IJT students protested on several major roads of the city. IJT members snatched keys of several buses and cars leaving passengers stranded on Canal Road, Multan Road and Band Road.s. Buses were also used to block traffic on these roads. A student associated with the IJT also set fire to a bus on Wahadat road.

CCPO Lahore told the media that 21 students had been arrested and no one would be allowed to take the law into their own hands. The CCPO added that a case would be lodged against those responsible for setting the bus ablaze and a case would be lodged against them.

IJT RESPONSE

The spokesman for IJT said it was not strange that bullets and empty bottles of alcohol were recovered from the hostel. He claimed that if the vice chancellor of the university wanted, even rocket launchers and hand grenades could have been recovered. According to the spokesman the police and university administration had evacuated the hostel and kept it under their control for several hours. He added that no one was allowed to enter the hostel for four hours.
