DURBAN: South Africa succeeded in taking lead over India in the first innings on the fourth day of the second and final Test here at Kingsmead on Sunday.

They were 395 for seven at lunch, 61 runs ahead of India’s first innings total of 334.

Legendary figure Jacques Kallis made his 45th Test century in his farewell Test. He scored 115 off 316 balls with 13 fours during his 393-minute long stay at the crease.

Kallis also went past India’s Rahul Dravid to become the third highest run-getter in Test cricket. Kallis reached 13289 in his 166th Test, one run ahead of Dravid’s 13288 in 164 Tests.

He also became the second top centurion after India’s Sachin Tendulkar who scored 51 hundreds in 200 Tests.

He is only the fourth South African to score a century in his final Test, and his 86-run stand with the nightwatchman Dale Steyn helped stretch the lead against India.

Kallis added 127 along with AB de Villiers (74) for the fourth wicket stand besides a 103-run opening stand provided by Alviro Petersen (62) and captain Graeme Smith (47).

For India, slow left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja grabbed five wickets for 135.
