Karachi DHA scuffle: Probe underway into alleged police involvement

• Affected family leaves flat after the assault incident in DHA.

KARACHI: Police said on Saturday that a full inquiry is underway into a scuffle at an apartment in Defence Housing Authority's Khayaban-e-Bukhari, after a viral video showed a woman assaulting another woman with a dumbbell.

According to police authorities, the cops visible in the video did not belong to the South Zone, with officials saying they were likely from the Korangi district.

The double-cabin vehicle visible in one of the videos was also not a South Zone police vehicle, the authorities said, adding that further information about the officers is being gathered.

The relevant district police were being investigated, and the case challan would be submitted to court after the investigation is completed.

DIG South Asad Raza said the inquiry into the incident would be conducted on merit, confirming that the victims — a brother and sister — had been living in the apartment with their mother.

A dispute between two women in an apartment in Khayaban-e-Bukhari, DHA, escalated into a physical altercation, with the CCTV footage showing one woman assaulting the other with an iron exercise dumbbell.

The video also showed two individuals in what appeared to be police uniforms restraining the woman being assaulted, and pushing a man accompanying the victim.

Victim Noor ul Ain shared a video of the incident on social media following the assault, which went viral. The affected family subsequently filed a complaint at Darakhshan police station.

Speaking about the background of the dispute, affected resident Ali Ahsan said the family had been living in the building since November 2021.

He said a woman residing on the fourth floor of the building collected maintenance charges, and that the family had paid their maintenance charges in advance.

He said the woman had cut off their water supply, and when they installed a water tank, she damaged it. He added that the woman had also threatened to cut off their electricity.

Following the incident, the affected family left the flat and shifted elsewhere, sources said.
