Lionel Richie hospitalised in ICU after St. Louis concert

Lionel Richie was hospitalised in the intensive care unit in St. Louis after performing over the weekend, according to TMZ. 

The 77-year-old singer checked himself into a local hospital following his Saturday night, August 29 performance at The Muny in Forest Park, reportedly out of caution while doctors evaluated him for possible mild dehydration. 

Sources told TMZ he's hoping to be discharged Tuesday.

Witnesses at the concert said Richie appeared to struggle toward the end of the show, asking his team to bring him a chair during his final song, All Night Long, so he could finish the performance seated. 

The show marked the first stop of his current Sing a Song All Night Long tour with Earth, Wind & Fire. 

He's next scheduled to perform September 26 in San Francisco.

This marks Richie's second health scare of the tour. In June, he was rushed to a hospital after falling ill mid-performance in St. Paul, Minnesota, telling the crowd he felt "dizzy" and "strange" before cutting the show short, paramedics met him backstage and transported him by ambulance. 

That episode forced him to postpone two subsequent shows, in Chicago and Columbus, before he returned to the stage in Pittsburgh on June 30.

His team attributed that earlier incident to dehydration as well.

Separately, Richie and Earth, Wind & Fire also postponed an August 6 concert in San Francisco after the band's drummer, John Paris, experienced his own unrelated medical emergency. 

A representative for Richie has not yet publicly commented on the latest hospitalisation.
