The Grammys may have drawn the line. BTS may rise above it at the VMAs.
After the Recording Academy introduced a new Best Asian Pop Music Performance category for the 2027 Grammys, RM, Jimin, Jin, Jungkook, J Hope, Suga and V unanimously announced that they would not submit music for Grammy consideration this year.
Critics argued that the new category could sideline K-pop by separating it from the broader pop field, while the K-pop supertars made their position clear: they want their music heard beyond region or language.
Now, the tables may be turning.
With the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards approaching on September 27, Billboard has included BTS among its potential contenders for the prestigious Video Vanguard Award, an honor recognizing artists whose visual work has made a lasting impact on music and culture.
While the eventual recipient has not yet been officially announced. The ARIRANG hitmakers are not arriving at the VMAs empty-handed.
The global stars have already secured two nominations for SWIM (Song of the Year and Best K-Pop), putting them in contention for both a major general-category prize and a genre award.
That contrast makes the VMA moment particularly striking.
While the Grammys' new Asian-pop category has triggered criticism over whether regional labels risk putting artists into narrower boxes, the VMAs have placed BTS's SWIM directly into the Song of the Year race alongside major pop names.
For the South Korean artists, it could become a powerful full-circle moment as they step away from an awards system, they felt divided music by region or language.
Then potentially receive one of MTV's most prestigious honours for the very global impact that made them impossible to categorize.
It is pertinent to note that nothing is official yet. Billboard's Video Vanguard mention is a prediction, not a confirmation, and MTV has not announced the 2026 honouree.
If BTS does take the stage to receive the Vanguard, the symbolism would be impossible to miss.
Additionally, the 2026 MTV VMAs will take place live from Los Angeles on September 27, with BTS already competing for two awards and potentially much more.
