King Charles faces fresh call to address Britain's slavery legacy

King Charles is set to receive a landmark Jamaican petition seeking answers over Britain's role in slavery and its case for reparations.

The petition is due to be formally lodged with the King on Monday, asks Charles to use his position to seek legal clarification over the treatment of enslaved Africans transported to Jamaica.

Jamaica's Culture Minister Olivia Grange arrived in London alongside members of the country's National Council on Reparations on Sunday.

The petition asks the monarch to seek advice from the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council on several key questions.

Grange said this case is rooted not only in the horrors of the past but in what she believes are the continuing economic and social consequences inherited by countries shaped by centuries of slavery.

She pointed to the lasting impact on areas including education, health and economic development.

Former St Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves, an influential figure in the regional reparations movement said the petition could help advance the wider campaign for reparatory justice.

Advocates are expected to continue raising the issue at a Caribbean reparations conference in Barbados later this month, followed by discussions around the UN General Assembly which King Charles is scheduled to attend.
