Fact-check: Fake PTA notice warns against answering calls from specific number
PTA addressed the circulating notice on its official social media accounts, calling it “false and misleading” and clarifying that no such alert had been issued

A notice circulating on social media claims that answering a call from the number, (051) 7080507, could enable fraudsters to steal funds from JazzCash, Easypaisa and other mobile accounts.
The document is fake and was not issued by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).
Claim
On September 3, a user on X, formerly known as Twitter, shared a notice purportedly issued by the PTA, advising people not to answer calls from (051) 7080507.
“Cyber Fraud Alert! If you receive a call from (051) 7080507, never answer it,” the user wrote. “These scammers can vanish money from your JazzCash, Easypaisa, or other mobile accounts in just a few seconds.”
At the time of writing, the post had received 4,260 views, 95 likes and 74 reposts.
Similar posts have also appeared on Facebook, YouTube and TikTok.
Fact
The PTA, the telecommunication regulator in Pakistan, has not issued any such notification.
Ahmed Shamim, the director general of the PTA’s International Relations and Government Affairs Division, confirmed to Geo Fact Check over the phone that the regulator had not issued the advisory.
The authority subsequently addressed the circulating notice on its official social media accounts, calling it “false and misleading” and clarifying that no such alert had been issued.
The formatting and wording of the document, therefore, do not represent an official PTA communication either.

Verdict: The claim is false. The PTA did not issue the viral notice about calls from (051) 7080507 and alleged theft from mobile payment accounts.
