‘Resident Evil' dominates box office with record opening

Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil reboot gave the long running horror series a huge start at the box office.

The movie made around like $60 million in North America during its first three days in cinemas. That result was much higher than Sony’s first estimate of $40 million.

Even the later estimate of $53 million to $55 million was lower than the final number.

The strong start, however, has now given the new Resident Evil movie the biggest opening in the history of the series.

The previous record came from Resident Evil: Afterlife. It made $60.1 million in North America during its entire time in cinemas.

The new movie is also doing well outside North America as it made another $43.8 million from 62 countries.

The story is about a medical courier, which is played by Austin Abrams, who finds himself in the middle of a deadly virus outbreak in Raccoon City.

Zach Cherry, Kali Reis and Paul Walter Hauser also star in the movie.

The result is another big moment for Cregger. Resident Evil has now passed the opening of his previous movie, Weapons, which made $43.5 million in 2025.

The movie has also received strong reviews, with a 96% critic score and 92% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Cregger has already hinted that this may not be the last Resident Evil movie he makes.
