Olivia Rodrigo pens down story behind 'yspsfagsil' album in new letter

Olivia Rodrigo has had a great run with her latest album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, and her The Unraveled Tour starts this week, ahead of which she reflected on how the album came to be.

The 23-year-old pop superstar penned down the emotional journey which brought the album about, in a letter to Grammy museum, writing, “I wrote and recorded you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love over the course of two years. It’s the chronological story of a romance, from beginning to end. From drop dead to cigarette smoke, it’s the journey of my first adult relationship, from all the excitement and possibilities of the start to the slow crumbling and, finally, the heartbreak that came with it."

The drivers license hitmaker continued, "While making the album, I kept thinking about how, in a relationship, both joy and melancholy can coexist side by side. It was cathartic for me, as a songwriter, to explore some of the less obvious feelings that come with falling in love. I had to relive all the anxiety, the longing, the jealousy, the sadness, and I ended up realizing that falling in love can genuinely make you feel like you’re going crazy."

Mentioning her favourite song in the album, Rodrigo noted, "The centerpiece of the album, and my favorite song I’ve ever written, is the cure. I wrote it about the sobering realization that being in a relationship wasn’t going to fix me or my insecurities the way I had hoped."

The Grammy winner also celebrated that her third studio album featured her first collaboration, "This album also features my first collaboration with a personal hero of mine, Robert Smith. Having him on what's wrong with me and getting to collaborate with him was nothing short of a dream come true. I still can’t quite believe it happened."

Rodrigo further added, "This album encapsulates a pretty formative chapter of my life, and when the people who’ve heard it share their interpretations of the songs, it fills me with pride. That’s truly the best thing I could wish for: that these songs become part of someone else’s story and help them move forward."

In the end, the purple songstress thanked her fans, "Thank you so much for listening to this album. I hope you can find yourself somewhere in these songs too and make them your own.”
