Fact-check: Rs10 banknote not being discontinued as of yet

A graphic circulating on Pakistani social media claims that the State Bank of Pakistan has decided to discontinue the Rs10 banknote from September 30.

The claim is false.

Claim

On September 4, a user posted a graphic claiming that the central bank was withdrawing the Rs10 banknote from circulation this month.

“The Government of Pakistan has decided to discontinue the Rs10 banknote,” the post reads. “September 30 has been set as the last date for exchanging the notes. All individuals are advised to exchange their Rs10 notes before the specified deadline.”

At the time of writing, the post had been liked 24 times and had received 10 comments.

Identical claims have also been shared on Facebook, TikTok and Instagram.

Fact

The Rs10 banknote is not being withdrawn from circulation, the State Bank of Pakistan has confirmed.

On September 17, the central bank rejected claims circulating online that the Rs10 banknote would be discontinued and that September 30 was the last date for exchanging the notes, describing the reports as “baseless”.

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, the State Bank said: “SBP categorically refutes reports circulating on social media regarding the purported discontinuation of the Rs10 banknote and the last date for its exchange.”

The central bank clarified that it had submitted a proposal for the introduction of a new banknote series, but the proposal was still under consideration by the Federal Cabinet.

Verdict: The State Bank of Pakistan has explicitly rejected the claim and said no such decision has been made yet.
