Lionel Richie makes major announcement after heart procedures
The music legend, 77, makes his first appearance via video amid his health issues

After weeks of health issues and multiple hospitalisations, Lionel Richie has broken cover to make a major announcement.
The music legend is returning to the American Idol judging panel alongside Carrie Underwood and Luke Bryan for the show’s upcoming 25th season. The trio announced the news during Bryan’s Luke Bryan & Friends concert at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on Thursday, September 24, with Richie joining the announcement via video.
“Hello Nashville! Look at this beautiful crowd,” Richie, 77, began. “Now, let me tell you something. Some of my greatest friendships have started right here in Nashville, Tennessee. That includes you, Carrie and Luke. Do you want to share our secret?”
Bryan, 50, then revealed the big news: “We’re coming back for the 25th season of American Idol, ladies and gentlemen.”
Underwood, 43 confirmed that Ryan Seacrest will also return as host.
The upcoming season premieres in spring 2027. Bryan and Richie have served as judges since season 16, while Underwood joined in season 23.
The announcement comes shortly after Richie underwent a procedure for atrial fibrillation, which led to three cancelled tour dates.
