Prince Edward gets special preview of Manchester theatre's 50th anniversary

Prince Edward enjoyed a special look behind the scenes at Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre as for a new exhibition marking the venue’s 50th anniversary.

The Duke of Edinburgh was pictured with curator and set designer Leslie Travers, who shared a photograph from the evening on Twitter. 

Alongside the image, Leslie wrote: “Wonderful opening of ‘Mythic Reinvention’ at the Manchester Royal Exchange Theatre.

An immersive exhibition celebrating the fiftieth birthday of the theatre through the craft of costume. 

It was great to give HRH Prince Edward a preview on opening night.”

The Royal Exchange’s archive contains more than 25,000 individual pieces, giving the exhibition a rich collection of material to draw from.

Starting tomorrow, September 28, Prince Edward will visit the United States celebrating the close ties between the UK and US. 

During his visit, he will focus on shared interests including youth empowerment, opportunity and the arts.
