KARACHI: Hundreds of students from dozens of schools participated in the Fifteenth Horlicks Inter-School Scrabble Championship held here on Sunday.
A total of 540 students from 100 schools of Karachi, Hyderabad, Badin and Islamabad took part in the nerve-wracking contest, organized by Pakistan Scrabble Association (PSA) at a local hotel.
Those who grabbed first positions in today’s games in six categories are: Romaisa Waseem, 9, from Karachi; Abdullah Ayub, 10, Badin; Bismah Fatima, 13, Karachi; Taha Mirza, 11, Karachi; Ahmed Abdullah, 12, Islamabad and; Wasim Baig, 25, from Karachi.
Thirty top contestants were registered for undergoing training and participating in a series of scrabble tournaments in the following months. Out of these, a final selection of fifteen players will be made in the coming months for representing Pakistan in the World Youth Scrabble Championship (WYSC) due to be held in September this year in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
The prize distribution ceremony marked the conclusion of the colorful event where parents of the participating students were also present. A shield was also presented on behalf of PSA to Moizullah Baig, 16, resident of Karachi who is the holder of last year’s WYSC.
