TOKYO: Tokyo police launched a murder investigation after a Chinese man was arrested for the brazen shooting of his wife at a cafe in one of Tokyo´s busiest districts, police and news reports said Monday.

The 54-year-old suspect, identified as Cao Jianping, was taken into custody shortly after the shooting in the capital´s Ikebukuro neighbourhood on Sunday.

Security footage reportedly showed the pair embroiled in quarrel shortly before the shooting, a rarity in Japan where crime involving firearms is usually connected to yakuza organised crime groups.

A spokeswoman for the Tokyo Metropolitan Police on Monday confirmed that a Chinese national in her fifties was fatally shot in her chest.

Local media reported that the victim was the alleged shooter´s wife. None of the other cafe customers were injured, Kyodo news agency said.
