KARACHI: Jamat-e-Islami (JI) Amir, Sirajul Haq Thursday said his party would continue to support anybody who stands for a just cause and takes a position on a principle.

Talking to Geo News in reaction to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan’s remarks against JI, Sirjul Haq said his statement was misquoted by a newspaper.

He urged Imran Khan not to react to any statement and added that he was contacted by PTI leaders after their party chief burst out against him.

“I have only been playing a role of a mediator to avert any kind of confrontation, create congenial environment and save the democracy,” he said, adding he had only made an attempt to pull country out of crisis.

He said his party supported the stand for reconstitution of Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and the charges of rigging in the general election.

Earlier, Imran Khan criticized JI Amir

Imran Khan demanded that JI should stop playing on both sides of the wicket and clarify its position whether to the people of Pakistan on whether it stands for ‘change’ or with the status quo.

Khan expressed shock and disappointment over the statement of JI Chief Sirajul Haq.

He said Haq’s failure to recognise the injustice of the 2013 general elections despite a national political consensus that systematic rigging took place raises serious questions on the commitment of the JI and its chief to implementation of Islamic principles.
