ISLAMABAD: The UN working group on a ten day mission to investigate enforced disappearances in Pakistan met with the missing persons commission on Monday.
The commission and the working group discussed the UN list which contains 106 missing persons. The commission informed the UN group that eight people on the list had been freed, while 21 cases were solved with decisions from the Supreme Court.
According to sources, Justice (R) Iqbal who heads the missing persons commission informed the UN working group that the search for 29 missing persons was ongoing.
The commission informed the working group that information pertaining to 28 missing persons sent by the UN could not be verified because they were from the 1980’s and 1990’s. 20 other cases were of foreign nationals.
Prior to this, the UN working group met with high ranking officials at the Foreign Office and were informed that the Supreme Court and government departments were working towards the release of the missing persons.
The working group will visit Punjab on September 11-15, following which it will travel to Quetta. On September 17, the group will travel to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and on the September 20 the group will brief the media.
