ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has set a Wednesday deadline for the Karachi police to arrest the assassins of MPA Manzar Imam. The apex court said it was a challenge for the police to arrest the killers and if it failed to do so then it could not catch anyone.
The Supreme Court also sought a reply from the police relating to the release of Ajmal Pahari.
A three-member bench headed by the Chief Justice, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was hearing the Karachi law and order case here.
CJ in his remarks said that the MPA was killed along with his guards and recalled that in the Shahzeb Khan murder case the civil society had came to the fore and the accused was arrested on court order.
He said for the court everyone is Shahzeb. Every officer was enjoying privileges, but not taking care of the common man, it was our duty to protect the life and property of every person.
CJ enquired from the police officials how many corpses were found in Karachi today, to which, police officials replied that until last night it was five, three more were found in the morning,
CJ said he came to know through a newspaper that Ajmal Pahari has been released while Sindh police have taken the stance that it was done under court pressure. CJ in remarks said that if you don’t present the evidence, then the court has no alternative but to order for the release of the accused and added that when we give our decision, it is not being implemented.
During proceedings, the bench was informed by the Attorney General that the Taliban factor plays a part in the law and order situation in the Karachi. To this the bench remarked that the Taliban are not a phenomenon which cannot be controlled.
The bench directed the attorney general to have the government depoliticize the police by Tuesday evening.
