Scientists may soon be announcing discovering ‘ripples in the fabric of spacetime’

Scientists working with the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) system could soon announce that they have observed gravitational waves or ripples in the fabric of spacetime. The discovery could change the understanding of the universe completely.

The waves were first predicted by Albert Einstein 100 years ago, but were never observed directly. Scientists at LIGO are expected host an event to give an ‘update on the search’ this week.

If the waves were detected they would offer greater insight into the farthest reaches of the universe. Rumours regarding the detection have been doing the rounds for weeks following a scientist claiming that the waves had been discovered and an announcement was likely.
