Police approach court to exhume Maulana Sami's body

ISLAMABAD: Police have sought permission from a sessions' judge in Rawalpindi to exhume the body of Maulana Sami ul Haq and conduct a post-mortem examination of the slain Jamiat-i-Ulema Islam-Sami (JUI-S) leader's body.

Haq, an influential religious scholar and former senator, was stabbed to death at his residence in Rawalpindi earlier this month.

Forensic experts and investigation officers have collected evidence from Haq's residence at Bahria Town to retrace the series of events that led to his death.

But the investigation has been marred by the lack of a postmortem report. The cleric's family have denied a request for post-mortem.

On Thursday, police received the forensic report of evidence collected from the murder scene.

According to media reports, a bloodstained kurta (shirt) was found hanging in the washroom of Haq's room; but forensic examination revealed that the blood spots did not belong to the slain leader.

Other pieces of evidence reportedly recovered from the crime scene and sent to the laboratory include fingerprints of three separate individuals, hair of three different lengths, the bloodstained bed sheet and three glasses.
