CM Sindh extends Rangers special powers for another 77 days

KARACHI: Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah late on Tuesday extended the special powers of the paramilitary Rangers force in the city for another 77 days.

The special powers were extended under Article 147 with the signature of the chief minister. A summary in this regard was however sent three days ago, sources told Geo News.

The Rangers' special powers were set to expire at midnight on May 3. The home department of Sindh government is now expected to write a letter to the centre in this regard.

The Sindh government handed over policing powers to the paramilitary force in 2013 under Protection of Pakistan Ordinance on the directions of the federal government.

The ‘police-like’ powers given to the paramilitary force became controversial after the Sindh Assembly passed a resolution to curtail the powers earlier this year. The federal government however rejected the summary giving the Rangers a free-hand to continue to operate with full powers.
