US expresses its concern over violence at the Torkham border

WASHINGTON: The United States does not want the situation at Torkham border to deteriorate, US assistant secretary for public affairs and department spokesperson John Kirby said during a press briefing on Wednesday.

“The United States is looking into the situation. It has contacted officials both from Afghanistan and Pakistan,” he said answering a question of the rising tensions between the two countries at the Pak-Afghan border.

He added that special representative for Pakistan and Afghanistan Richard Olson had met the Afghan president in this regard. “We don’t want to see terrorism in the region,” he said.

Speaking on a question regarding the Karachi operation he said that he was not in a position to speak about the trials on Muttahida Qaumi Movement leader, however he added that the US was deeply concerned about missing persons, and deaths in custody. “Exactly like the rest of the world is.”

He added that the US has always raised its voice over human rights violations in the world.
