Hijab official part of police uniform in Scotland

Scotland has done something which has made the Muslim residents of that country proud.

According to an article published in the Independent, the police force of Scotland has announced that Hijab will now become an official part of the police uniform in order to achieve its aim of creating a more diverse work force.

In the past, Muslim police officers who wished to wear the Hijab on duty were allowed to do so but only if they had approval from their supervisors.

According to the statistics released from the Scottish Police Authority earlier this year, only 2.6% of the 4,809 applications to join the workforce were from the people with ethnic backgrounds.

The report said: “If the black and minority ethnic groups (BME) national average of 4 per cent is to be met within the organization, an additional 650 BME recruits are required across all areas of the business.

“Considering current application trends, this would appear to be unachievable.”

Earlier, in 2001, the Metropolitan police had introduced hijab as an optional part of the force’s official uniform in a similar drive to achieve a more diverse work force.
