Acid thrown on woman’s face for spurning advances

KAHIRPUR: A 35-year-old woman suffered burn injuries on her face after two men threw acid on her in Sindh's Khairpur district.

The victim Fahmida spoke to Geo News about her ordeal. She said that she was sleeping in her house at night on November 4, when two men, Hameed and Mola Buksh, entered her house and threw acid on her face.

According to Fahmida, she recognised the culprits as they have been threatening her to talk with them on phone. She added when she refused to talk, they took the heinous step.

Fahmida also said that the culprits were threatening her since past six months. Police failed to take action against them, she said.

As a result of the attack, she suffered 15 percent burn injuries that also affected her eye sight, informed Civil Hospital Burns Ward in charge Dr Ahmer.

Fahmida belongs to a village in Khairpur district and was at her father’s house when the incident took place.

Acid attacks are common in Pakistan with scores of such assaults taking place each year.

The plight of acid attack victims and survivors became the focus of a 40-minute Oscar-winning documentary 'Saving Face' by a Pakistani woman Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy in 2012.
