Tamil Nadu CM's critical health condition spikes fears of unrest

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, a popular and revered politician, is declared to be in critical condition and has been put on ventilator, after suffering from a heart attack earlier on Sunday. Consequently, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party members have been called in to the hospital.

The 68-year-old politician has held the Chief Minister position three times prior to her current tenure. She was admitted to Apollo Hospitals two months ago for respiratory infection and dehydration.

Jayalalithaa’s fans have swarmed the hospital in order to stay updated on her medical condition. Local media reports indicate that police officers have been summoned to and stationed around the hospital to maintain order.

In addition, security is on high alert around Jayalalithaa’s residence as well, since she inspires her admirers so much so that many of them call her “Amma” (mother). She has also been known for her philanthropic initiatives.

It is likely that her worsening health may lead to serious disturbances in the state. Two people have already been taken into custody for allegedly spreading rumours pertaining to her health in October, BBC reported.

The admired politician, who has been a famed name in the film industry and credited with roles in over 150 movies, has been unwell since months. Earlier, in 2014, she was tangled in corruption cases, and was given a 4-year sentence; nevertheless, she resumed office in May this year.

According to The Times of India, Apollo Hospitals COO Subbiah Viswanathan commented, "The chief minister is being treated and closely monitored by a team of experts."

While a hospital spokesman opined that Jayalalithaa is recovering, the state has been gearing up for unrest in case of any untoward news.

Notable names in India wish her well. Rahul Gandhi said, “I hope she recovers and gets well as soon as possible," India Today reported.
