BLOG: We will first, and reason it out after

Arthur Schopenhauer, an eminent German philosopher of the 19th century, has famously said that we will first, and reason it out after. Will, dominates reason. It is rarely the other way around.

Here in Pakistan, our political will is reasoned out by hundreds of television analysts and hosts. For example, our political will tells us that we cannot afford to take on Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman, chief of the Islamic party JUI-F. Hence, it is best to shelve the bill that criminalizes forced conversions. The Sindh Assembly rescinded a draft legislation, which could have ushered a historic milestone for the minorities in Pakistan, for good reason: amendment.

The fight against terrorism has witnessed many battles and operations, but, each renewed effort reminds one of the Greek mythology, Sisyphus. As the legend goes, Sisyphus was condemned by the gods to ceaselessly rolling a rock to the top of a mountain only to repeat the action when the stone would fall back of its own weight. It was an endless loop. Nothing, they thought, could be more dreadful than futile labor.

It was our will to not give Bangladeshis their due rights and we reason the fall out by telling ourselves that India conspired against us in cahoots with the Bangladeshis. We let Lashkar e Jhangvi and all other sectarian outfits flourish. We watch silently as people are killed because of their sect.

Political will should be reasoned out first.

Democracy is the cure for the disease of making decisions single-handedly. Julius Caesar was killed by Brutus only because he had sensed Caesar' will surpass all.

"Not that I love Caesar less but I love Rome more."
