Honouring Edhi: SBP unveils commemorative coin worth Rs. 50

KARACHI: In a press event here at the headquarters, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) officially unveiled an honorary coin to commemorate late humanitarian Abdul Sattar Edhi’s services to the country.
Speaking at the event, Faisal Edhi – the late philanthropist’s son and heir – expressed his gratitude to the Pakistani government and SBP.
“I intend to continue the mission of Edhi sahib, and I believe that it should be carried on until the end of times,” Faisal Edhi said. He also urged the citizens to take inspiration from his father, adding that “everyone should help take this mission forward, and partake in all services for the humanity.”
The decision to issue the commemorative coin was announced earlier on March 28, by the federal government, following a cabinet meeting held on July 15, 2016. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif agreed to put out the coin in a nod to Edhi’s meritorious services.
With regard to its availability, the coin can be purchased from exchange counters of SBP Banking Services Corporation’s 16 branches across the country.

The coin, worth Rs. 50 in terms of face value, is manufactured combining two metals – nickel and copper – in a 1:3 ratio. It measures 3 centimetres across the diameter and weighs 13.5 grammes.
To date, 27 honorary coins have been issued, four of which were to memorialise founder of the nation Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah and his sister Fatima Jinnah, Allama Iqbal, and Benazir Bhutto.
