SSP Operations Sajjad Khan told Geo News that Bashir Ahmad, a lecturer in the English department, was arrested from Regi Model Town, an area in the city that shares a border with Khyber Agency of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas.

A total of 20 grammes of ‘ice’ and 150 grammes of hashish were recovered from the lecturer, said Sajjad.

Sajjad said complaints of drugs being used in the varsity had been reported earlier, after which police took action. He explained that police had set up special checkpoints and arrested him when his vehicle was stopped and checked.

The professor resisted arrest, informed the official, adding that two pistols were also recovered from his possession.

Initial investigations suggest the teacher was supplying drugs in the varsity.

While talking about the arrested lecturer, an employee in the administration of Islamia College, requesting anonymity, told Geo News that Ahmad was studying at the varsity in 2008 and was an active member of the students federation during the time. He later became a teacher after completing his studies.

According to webmd.com, ‘ice’ is the street name for the illegal drug methamphetamine – which mainly comes in the form of a white powder or crystals. It can be swallowed, snorted, injected, or as is becoming more common, smoked.

Meth works by flooding the brain with massive amounts of dopamine, a neurochemical normally released in small amounts in response to something pleasurable.
