SC requested to direct JIT members to appear before NAB: sources

ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has written to the Supreme Court to direct members of the Panama Papers case Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to record their statements before the bureau, Geo News reported, citing sources.

NAB has submitted an application to Justice Ijaz-ul-Ahsan, who has been appointed to oversee the probe by NAB against the Sharifs.

According to sources, NAB had written to JIT chief Wajid Zia to ask the team's members to record their statements before NAB, to which Zia replied that since JIT has ceased to exist, therefore the apex court be approached for the purpose.

In its request to the judge, NAB has said that recording statements of the JIT members is important for filing references against Nawaz Sharif and his sons.

In its July 28 verdict, the Supreme Court had ruled to send references against Nawaz Sharif, his children Maryam, Hussain and Hasan, son-in-law Captain (retd) Safdar and Ishaq Dar to an accountability court.

In its order, the five-member-bench requested the Chief Justice of Pakistan to nominate a judge of the Supreme Court to supervise and monitor implementation of the judgement and oversee proceedings of NAB and the accountability court.
