KARACHI: A fire that had erupted in a four-storey building in Karachi was brought under control after hectic efforts lasting four hours on Wednesday.

Four residents of the building fainted as smoke continued to billow from the charred building.

According to fire brigade and rescue officials, the fire broke out in a building located in the Patel Para vicinity at around 14.30pm.

Initially, two fire tenders were sent to control the blaze but it spread rapidly. The fire department sent four more fire tenders, which, along with a water bouser were able to douse the fire after four hours of rescue efforts.

A garment workshop was operating from the fourth storey of the building, rescue sources said.

A residential building in PECHS Block 6 caught fire after a blast early Wednesday, according to the police.

As many as three fire tenders reached the spot to douse the flames, rescue sources said.

At least one body was recovered from the site, and a security watchman was also injured in the incident, according to the police.

Eight to nine workers are employed at the warehouse, where cosmetics were being made and stored, according to sources.

Rescue officials said the blast, which occurred before the fire spread, caused windows of nearby buildings to shatter and the adjoining wall of a school to collapse.
