QUETTA: Balochistan Member Provincial Assembly (MPA) Abdul Majeed Achakzai — accused of fatally running over a traffic policeman in Quetta — was released on bail today.

The anti-terrorism court hearing the case had granted bail to the Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) lawmaker on Thursday after ordering him to submit a Rs0.5 million surety bond.

Traffic Sub-Inspector Haji Attaullah was killed after he was allegedly run over by Achakzai while the MPA was driving a Land Cruiser on GPO Chowk on June 20 this year.

After posting bail, jail superintendent Ishaq Zehri escorted Achakzai out of jail, where PkMAP workers were present to greet their leader.

The party workers and close associates present outside the jail showered the MPA with rose petals and chanted slogans in his favour.

Achakzai is already on bail in the murder case of a civilian and has been exonerated in separate kidnapping and vehicle tampering cases.

However, son of the slain traffic policeman, Moazzam, has objected over the bail granted to Achakzai, requesting the government to pursue the cast against him. He said they were too poor to do so, adding that had they been able to fight the case against the MPA he would not have been released from prison.

In September, the sessions court had indicted Achakzai, who refused to accept the charges against him.

The video of the incident had gone viral on social media, following which police took action against the death of their colleague.

Achakzai was elected to the provincial assembly from Killa Abdullah on PB-13.
