Intermediate board exams postponed in Peshawar due to officials' strike

PESHAWAR: The Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE) Peshawar announced on Tuesday postponement of the intermediate examinations that were due to start on April 20 owing to the strike called by board employees.

While talking to Geo News, BISE chairperson Professor Dr Fazl-ur-Rehman said the new date of intermediate examinations would be announced soon.

He added the exams would most likely start before April 25.

The new date is expected to be given soon as the disgruntled employees have ended their strike.

The strike that had been going on for the past 18 days started over a bill that the board employees feared would affect the autonomy of the board.

They had reservations over the decision on bringing the board under the education department as they believed it would increase political interference.

The full strike which started April 12 saw employees of all the education boards across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa protest against the government.

The protesting employees, backed by opposition leaders, said they would not let the quality of education be affected.

However, the protesting employees met Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser later who assured them of not tabling the bill. Therefore, the strike was called off.

The president of board employees council, Tariq Safi, confirmed that the strike was called off.

He said the employees would resume work on Wednesday.
