Former finance minister Miftah Ismail on Tuesday said that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has made a habit of blaming previous governments as an excuse before hiking prices of any commodity.

Speaking with Geo News, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader said the Rs4 increase per electricity unit will be a huge burden on the masses.

The PML-N government used to take the burden of Rs10-12 billion deficit in the power sector, while PTI is burdening the masses instead of decreasing the deficit.

“It has become PTI’s habit to hurl false accusations on previous governments to manufacture an excuse before hiking prices [of anything],” said Miftah.

He also rebutted claims of addition of Rs400 circular debt, and said the PML-N government got Rs503 billion in debt while it left Rs492 billion.

After an increase in the gas tariff, the government is likely to increase the price of electricity by Rs3.75 per unit.

A decision regarding the hike in electricity tariff will be taken today (Tuesday) during an Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) meeting chaired by Finance Minister Asad Umar.
