KARACHI: Police officers shot at and wounded a couple on a bike Tuesday night here in the metropolis' Korangi locality, Geo News reported, in what becomes another controversial case of authorities' gun violence.

Officers who shot at the couple fled the scene in Awami Colony, leaving their rifles behind after they realised that the man and woman were injured in the "shoot-out", sources said.

Police had initially signalled the bike to stop and opened fire on the couple when they didn't stop, sources further mentioned, adding that the officers had lied about unidentified persons snatching the state-issued rifles.

The police officers in question were consequently suspended and an order was given to file a first information report (FIR) in this regard.

Sources also noted that the incident took place outside a shop selling alcohol and the snap-checking officers were busy searching people leaving the liquor store.
