KARACHI: Actor Zaheen Tahira is very much alive and is currently admitted in the coronary care unit (CCU), her grandson told Geo News late Thursday evening.

Her grandson, special effects artist Danial Shahzad Khan, told Geo News that she was under treatment at the hospital and, as of reporting time, he had been told that she would be taken off the ventilator.

Danial Shahzad Khan also expressed frustration with the rumours on social media, saying it was extremely irresponsible and wrong to spread such rumours and share fake news on platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.

Earlier in the day, her son, Kamran Khan, had also confirmed that Tahira, 70, was alive and had refuted rumours circulating on social media about his mother's death.

Speaking to Geo News, Kamran Khan had explained that the beloved actress was still in the hospital and had not died. She was recuperating and doing better, he had added.

Her condition has improved, he had said, noting that there was a possibility that she would be taken off the ventilator soon.

A hospital spokesperson confirmed that she has started to recover but was still on the ventilator.

"It will take her some time to return to health especially taking into consideration her age, the spokesperson said.

Rumours circulating on social media had indicated that the actress had passed away after becoming severely ill, causing her condition to worsen before fake news of her death.

On Tuesday, her family had explained that she was doing better and had started to talk as well.

"She is recovering and doing better. She has also started to talk now," the family of Tahira, 70, explained, adding that she had been admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) following a major cardiac arrest on June 23.

A day prior, actors, models, and others from Pakistan’s showbiz industry had come together after news of her illness surfaced to send her love and prayers, pray for her recovery, and urge people to do the same.

The veteran actor is known for her role in TV drama Khuda Ki Basti. She entered the entertainment industry in the mid-60s and is one of the most beloved actresses of Pakistan.

She has worked in the entertainment industry for decades, in various lead roles, in more than 700 dramas. She was honoured with the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz in 2013 by then-president Asif Ali Zardari for her distinctive work in the Pakistani TV industry.
