Cabinet approves appointment of new Punjab chief secretary, IG

  • Ex-federal finance secretary Dr Kamran Ali Afzal appointed new Punjab chief secretary. 
  • Punjab Safe Cities Authority AIG Rao Sardar appointed new IG. 
  • Decision to appoint the two to the posts was taken in a meeting between PM Imran Khan and CM Buzdar. 


LAHORE: The federal cabinet approved the appointment of Dr Kamran Ali Afzal as the new Punjab chief secretary in place of Jawad Rafique Malik, on Monday. 

The cabinet also approved the appointment of Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) director-general additional IGP Rao Sardar as Punjab police chief. He will replace incumbent Punjab IG Inam Ghani.

The appointments were made based on a summary forwarded to the cabinet by the Punjab chief minister. 

The News had earlier reported that PM Imran Khan and Chief Minister Usman Buzdar decided in a meeting to make the important changes to the Punjab government.

The Punjab government is changing the Punjab IGP for the sixth time, making Sardar the seventh IG of the province in the PTI-led government.

On the other hand, the chief secretary Punjab has been changed four times since the PTI came to power, making Afzal the fifth chief secretary during the PTI's three-year tenure. 

Buzdar decides to make important changes to provincial govt

Geo News had earlier reported that the Punjab chief minister had decided to inform the federal government in writing about replacing the IG Punjab and the Punjab chief secretary.

The provincial cabinet is likely to be shuffled as well, sources had informed Geo News. 

Buzdar had sent a panel of names for the new chief secretary and IG Punjab to the federal government, sources had said.

In addition to the chief secretary and IG Punjab, police chiefs and senior administrative officers of Punjab, including Lahore, are also likely to be replaced, sources had said.
