A professor from Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) was suspended for referring to examples of rape in Hindu mythology that hurt religious sentiments of students and staff, NDTV reported.

Dr Jitendra Kumar, who is an assistant professor at AMU's Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, referred to these examples during a class on medical jurisprudence.

University officials called it a serious issue of misconduct and gave the professor 24 hours to explain himself.

After receiving the notice, Kumar apologised.

Prof Kumar wrote to the Vice Chancelor and said, "My intention was not to hurt religious sentiments of any particular religion and it was done only to highlight that rape has been a part of our society since long."

He mentioned that it was "an unintentional mistake" and also reassured that "no such incident will occur in the future".

Controversy had sparked after a student posted the professor's video clip on social media.
