Children in America are killed more by gun violence than accidents, diseases, and drug overdoses, a recent report has shown, according to the Daily Mail.

Researchers at the University of Michigan reported that more than 4,300 children, aged one to 19 years, lost their lives to firearm injuries in 2020. This was the first year when gun violence surpassed vehicle crashes as the leading killer.

Researchers also published findings in the New England Journal of Medicine where they reported a record of 45,222 firearm deaths in 2020.

They then decided to explore how many of these deaths were affecting young people and found that in 2020, out of every 100,000 children in the US, six died of firearm-related deaths.

The percentage of suicides carried out via firearms also increased during the year.

Jason Goldstick, a research associate professor at Michigan, noted that other studies point towards the increase in gun violence in America as well.

A study from the University of California, for example, noted an increase in the purchase of firearms early in the pandemic.
