ISLAMABAD: The Contempt of Court Bill, 2012 was presented in the Senate on Wednesday. Speaking on the floor of the Senate, PML-N Senator Ishaq Dar said his party strongly opposed the bill calling it a “slap on our faces.”

Dar added that even if the bill was approved, the PML-N would try to ensure that it does not remain part of the constitution.

The vice president of the National Party, Hasil Bizenjo said the contempt bill should be sent to the standing committee for debate.

The Contempt of Court Bill, 2012 has already been approved by the National Assembly. The bill excuses holders of public office from contempt proceedings.

If approved in the Senate the bill will require a formal presidential assent to become law, which will repeal the existing contempt law.
