Stanley Tucci has delivered his verdict on the burning topic of straight actors playing gay characters in the movies.

During an interview with BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, the Transformer star said that to be an actor, “you’re supposed to play different people”. “You just are. That’s the whole point of it,” he told the at program.

The Terminal actor also said, “Obviously, I believe that’s fine.”

“I am always very flattered when gay men come up to me and talk to me about ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ or they talk about ‘Supernova,’ and they say that, ‘It was just so beautiful,’ you know, ‘You did it the right way,’” he said. “Because often, it’s not done the right way.”

Historically, heterosexual actors have played gay characters in Hollywood.

For example, Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal were seen as lovers in 2005's Brokeback Mountain, while Cate Blanchett fell head over heels for a shopgirl in 2015's Carol.
