Authorities reported early Sunday that at least two people were killed in a shooting in Washington DC with five others injured as officials look for a suspect, urging citizens to assist in apprehending the criminal.

According to local US media reports, the shooting in Washington DC occurred at around 3am near the intersection of 7th and P Street, Northwest, several blocks away from the White House.

Officials described the victims as adults and their condition has not been released by the police. It remains unknown how the shooting erupted.

In a post on X — former Twitter — the police said it had begun a search for one suspect in the attack, which it described as a "B/M [Black male], average build, wearing light pants, blue shirt," adding that he had last been seen on foot heading south.

Metropolitan Police Executive Assistant Chief Jeffrey Carroll said in a media briefing: "We’re asking anyone who may have any information related to this incident or may have witnessed it to contact the Metropolitan Police Department."

This shooting comes weeks after a person was shot dead and three others were injured in a gun violence incident in Northeast Washington DC in February, Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) officials had said.

When officials arrived at the 1200 block of Raum Street, Northeast they found an injured man inside the location and another outside.
