An unexpected event took place for skygazers in Southern California after a streak of light was seen over the night sky on Tuesday morning, leaving people wondering about the origins of the strange occurrence.

However, authorities in the US military force described the details of the streak of light that left hundreds of people stunned.

The US Space Command said in a statement that the light streak over Los Angeles’ sky was caused by the debris from a Chinese spacecraft.

The sightings of the space debris were widely reported on social media with people uploading several videos of the lighting streak.

A US Space Command spokesperson confirmed to Fox 11: "US Space Command can confirm the People's Republic of China SZ-15 Module, SCC# 56873, re-entered the Earth’s atmosphere over the eastern Pacific Ocean at approximately 1:43am Pacific Time on April 2."

A US non-profit Aerospace Corp said that the Chinese Shenzhou module utilised for launching Beijing astronauts into space in November 2022 and its debris was expected to fall over the Pacific Ocean.

As Elon Musk’s SpaceX continued to launch its Falcon 9 rocket to send satellites into space, people thought it was some kind of related hardware.

Six hours earlier the sightings, SpaceX launched 22 of the Starlink satellites from Vandenberg Space Force Base on California's central coast.
