Meta’s rollout of its AI assistant on WhatsApp has triggered user backlash, especially across Europe, as many report they cannot turn off or remove the new feature, BBC reported.
Represented by a persistent blue circle in the chat interface, the AI assistant is built into the platform and remains visible by default, raising concerns over user autonomy and control.
Although Meta claims the AI is “entirely optional,” users say it appears automatically and cannot be disabled. The assistant can answer questions, generate images, and provide information, but many see its forced integration as intrusive.
Privacy advocates have criticised the move. Some experts argue that no one should be required to use AI and that the data used to train Meta's models could compromise user privacy.
Critics have also pointed out that some training data may have been sourced from personal information or pirated content, sparking further alarm about data misuse.
Meta maintains that personal conversations on WhatsApp remain end-to-end encrypted and that AI interactions are separate.
However, the company has not provided a clear option for users to opt out entirely. The lack of transparency and control has fueled concerns about the future direction of AI in messaging platforms.
Users and privacy experts alike are calling for greater accountability and the ability to disable AI features. The controversy adds to ongoing global discussions about consent, data ethics, and the role of AI in everyday communications.
