Nicole Kidman was honored with a 2025 Women in Motion award for her contribution in gender equality in the industry at the Cannes Film Festival.
In 2017, the Hollywood actress vowed that she would work with female directors every 18 months.
In the eight years since, the Oscar winner has collaborated with 27 female directors, including her project in process.
At the event, as per The Sydney Morning Herald, Kidman began, "When I first came here, it was with Far and Away. The next year, I came with To Die For. Two very different films!"
"I had to start to just say, ‘This is how I’m doing it. We’ll take the risk. We’re going to mentor and support and help and protect’,” she added. “The only way to do it is to actually do the work, show up and go: ‘I’m here. I’ll be in your film'."
Referring to her recent meeting with a director for an 'incredibly disturbing' project, the Babygirl actress told the audience, “He said, ‘I have something that is incredibly disturbing. Are you frightened of that?' I said, ‘Absolutely not. I’m thrilled about it'."
Before signing off, Kidman shared, “I don’t want to be contained. Constantly looking to push the boundaries is what I’m looking for. I also love very low-budget filmmaking that is purely experimental so that you don’t have the enormous risk attached to it."
For those unversed, previous winners of Women in Motion awards include Donna Langley, Michelle Yeoh, Viola Davis, Salma Hayek, Gong Li, Patty Jenkin, Isabelle Huppert, Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon, and Jane Fonda.
