Prince Harry had a special reason to celebrate at this year’s WellChild Awards.
Harry’s words soon became one of the evening’s most touching moments.
The Duke used his appearance at Monday night’s ceremony to honour the nurses who have spent the past two decades supporting seriously ill children and their families across the UK.
He has attended the event every year for almost two decades, including during his time living in the US, described the anniversary as a “particularly special” occasion.
“Twenty years is quite a milestone,” he said, paying tribute to the nurses who have made a lasting difference to families in hospitals and communities around the country.
The Duke then asked the WellChild nurses in the room to stand, telling the audience it was their chance to “embarrass and thank you”.
The request was met with loud applause as the nurses received a well-deserved standing ovation.
Speaking about the “mums and dads” who care for seriously ill children, Harry became emotional as he acknowledged the demands placed on parents and carers.
Gaby Roslin, who was presenting the ceremony reminded Harry of another appearance six years earlier.
“It’s happening again,” he joked, referring to his emotional 2019 speech when Gaby had also stepped in to support him.
When she took his arm, the Prince quipped: “That doesn’t help, that makes it worse,” prompting laughter from the room and giving the Duke a chance to regain his composure.
“I sincerely hope that you take strength from nights like this,” Harry said, he went on to say while others may not know every detail of their day, their dedication and the weight of their care were recognised.
