Duke of Edinburgh pays tribute to George Washington after inspiring Baltimore students

The Duke of Edinburgh had a busy day in the United States, visiting a Baltimore school before travelling to Mount Vernon.

The Duke visited Western High School in Baltimore, the oldest all-girls public high school in the United States, as it became a new partner of The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award USA.

During the visit, he delivered a speech to students and heard more about how the school will take part in the programme, which encourages young people to develop skills and confidence through experiences outside the traditional classroom.

The Duke has long supported opportunities that help young people build leadership, resilience and practical abilities, and Western is among seven Baltimore City Public Schools joining the programme.

Prince Edward later travelled to Mount Vernon, the historic Virginia estate and former home of George Washington, where he toured its new education centre and met supporters and historians.

During the visit, he also paid his respects at Washington’s tomb, laying a wreath at the final resting place of the first US president.

The Award’s US team said the two countries are connected by “shared values, shared sacrifice and shared opportunity.”
