Indian premier Narendra Modi has started interfering in religious affairs of Muslims as he on Monday hinted at prohibiting the Muslim practice of 'triple talaq'.

Opposing the Islamic way of parting of ways at a rally in Uttar Pradesh on Monday, the Indian prime minister said the he could not allow lives of Muslim women to be ruined by 'triple talaq'.

"Now the issue of talaq has come up. Just like if any Hindu commits female feticide he will have to go to jail, similarly what is the crime of my Muslim sisters that someone says talaq over phone and her life is destroyed," he said, according to Indian media.

Urging news channels to not label the issue as 'Hindu versus Muslim', Modi said: "In democracy, there should be discussion. The government has put forward its position. Those who want to digress from triple talaq are instigating people...in the country, lives of Muslim women cannot be allowed to be ruined by triple talaq."

At the rally, the Indian prime minister was also seen asking the participants 'whether the rights of Muslim women should be protected or not and whether they should get equal rights or not?'

"Getting the Muslim women their rights as per the Constitution is the responsibility of the government and the people of the country," he said, regardless of the will of the Muslim women themselves.

The statement prompted strong reaction by Muslim organisations in India.
