Social media potpourri: LinkedIn to add Facebook-like feature

Professional networking website LinkedIn recently announced to overhaul its timeline by adding a 'Trending Storylines' feature in a bid to boost user engagement and authority.

The new option will arrange news stories and content pouring into the network in terms in a customised manner based on users’ tastes and preferences. According to JP Mangalindan of Yahoo Finance, this comes in time as “until now, LinkedIn lacked a solution for organising all that content in a way its 450 million users could quickly and conveniently digest.”

LinkedIn executive editor Dan Roth acknowledged that catching up with trending conversations is not easy at present. However, he added that the company’s “goal is to make sure [our users are] given the chance to sound smarter, so they can walk into any meeting and know exactly what people might be talking about.”

In addition, an edge over its indirect competitors is that LinkedIn’s revamped feed will be available on its mobile app as well. It can be seen on the phone as the ‘Trending’ tab, while it’s clickable on the top-right corner of the computer screen.

Furthermore, a gist of each article will be offered on the newsfeed, which, if clicked, will lead to additional related stories. “Each story will have a unique hashtag associated with it, making it easy for you to join the conversation and add your own take on the issue,” reads the official blog post.

The company, which was purchased by Microsoft in December last year, experienced a 40 percent year-over-year (YoY) growth in engaged sessions per week. It makes sense as well, considering that it published “160,000 long-form articles every week,” as per the presentation disclosed to the press.

In the US, the feature has already been rolled out, but “will expand to other countries soon.”
