CHENNAI: Dog really is man’s best friend. This was proven recently when two street dogs in Madras, Chennai, helped the arrest the perpetrator of a stabbing incident.

The two dogs chased down the man, identified as R Raghunath, after he allegedly stabbed his former colleague on the road, after witnessing the stabbing incident.

The dogs bit the suspect making him unable to run away. He was ultimately caught by people in the area and later handed over to the police.

"When they bit him, he could not run because his focus was on the dogs. That is when I and other members of the public got hold of him until the police came and took him away,'' recalled S Raman, a rickshaw driver who looks after the dogs, while speaking to BBC.

According to police, Raghunath stabbed the victim because he lost her job after she accused him of sexual harassment.

According to Natasha Chandy, a Bangalore-based Canine Counsellor, the behaviour of the dogs is not out of the ordinary.

Street dogs are quite instinctive and can read body language pretty well. After witnessing the incident, the dogs could have sensed that something wrong has happened, she explained, adding that it is quiet unlikely that the dogs ran after the man because of their ‘chase instinct’.
