KARACHI: London once again became a victim of terrorism when a van ploughed through pedestrians and worshippers coming out of the Finsbury Park Mosque late Sunday night after evening prayers during Ramazan, killing at least one person and injuring eight others.

One person – a white man – has been detained by the Metropolitan Police and has been admitted to the hospital for medical treatment, following which he will be taken into custody.

In this regard, tracked down one of the people who partially witnessed what transpired in the north London area. Cynthia Vanzella, speaking exclusively over the phone, described the event – that took place around midnight – as both confusing and disturbing.

Vanzella lives near Seven Sisters Road and was at home, preparing to go to sleep when she heard a commotion outside her flat. "I ran towards my window and people were shouting nervously," she explained, adding that the scene was chaotic, with the wounded asking for help and others trying to figure out what had happened.

However, it did not take long for the police reinforcement to arrive on the scene, Vanzella informed.

The witness mentioned that a police patrol car, which was passing on the road nearby, immediately drove over to the scene. "The traffic was bad at the time. Right after the [police] car stopped, a lot of people started pushing this man [the alleged suspect] to the police, as if signalling to arrest him," she stated.

Vanzella, a journalist, lives on the second floor in an apartment around the corner of the street. "I could only see half of the way. I think the van was a little further away, so I only saw the police put the man inside their car," she explained.

When asked if rumours of other, unaccounted for suspects were there, she said, "I honestly don't know. Maybe they arrested more afterwards."
